The undergraduate student government unanimously appointed the co-chief of staff of the Undergraduate Students Association Council Facilities Commission as the new Facilities commissioner Tuesday.

Lauren Hearne, a third-year global studies student, will replace Carlos Quintanilla as the USAC Facilities commissioner for the remaining weeks of the council’s term.

“I want to fulfill Carlos’ platforms and help the transition process for the newly elected commissioner,” Hearne said.

Hearne added that she hopes to bring a resolution about water conservation to council next week. She said the office has been working on the measure since last quarter.

Hearne has been involved in USAC since 2013, when she served as the USAC internship director.

Quintanilla, who resigned in late March for personal reasons, said he hoped his successor would carry out his platforms for the rest of the year. He added that he provided a list of the work he hoped the office would complete before the end of the term.

USAC President Avinoam Baral said he chose to nominate Hearne because he wanted to choose a candidate who had the experience necessary to continue the work the office has been doing this year. He added that offering guidance to the soon-to-be-elected Facilities commissioner was also an important factor in his decision to nominate Hearne.

“I wanted to choose someone who can serve as a transition,” Baral said. “Being able to lean on the previous councilmember is important.”

Bruins United candidate Ian Cocroft is running unopposed for the Facilities commissioner position in the upcoming USAC election.
