Town hall to prompt discussion on diversity requirement proposal

Bruin Democrats and Bruin Republicans will hold a town hall Tuesday to discuss different perspectives on the diversity requirement proposal, which UCLA faculty members can vote on until Friday.
The event is also sponsored by the Undergraduate Students Association Council External Vice President’s office and Academic Affairs Commission, both of which have said they support the diversity requirement. Bruin Republicans members protested the proposal this year.
The proposal calls for students in the College of Letters and Science to take a course related to inequalities based on factors such as gender, race, sexuality and religion.
Students can learn about the impact of the proposal on UCLA undergraduates and share their opinions on the requirement at the town hall. Student and professor speakers will share their support or opposition to the proposal at the event.
In October, UCLA faculty in the College of Letters and Science passed the diversity requirement proposal, which was subsequently approved by the Academic Senate.
A petition from more than 50 professors submitted to the UCLA Academic Senate in December prompted a new vote, which is also open to UCLA faculty outside the College of Letters and Science.
Past campaigns to pass similar diversity-related requirements failed in 2004 and 2012.
