UCLA announced Friday the new dean of the Henry Samueli School of Engineering and Applied Science who will begin her term next January.

Jayathi Murthy, who is currently the chair and a professor of mechanical engineering at the University of Texas at Austin, will become the new dean effective Jan. 1, 2016 when she joins UCLA, according to a letter from Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost Scott Waugh. She has previously worked at Carnegie Melon University and Purdue University and is currently doing research on nano- and micro- electromechanical systems.

Vijay Dhir, the current dean of the engineering school, announced his plans to step down as dean in October 2013. He said he planned to return to his original position as a professor in mechanical and aerospace engineering to focus on his research, according to Daily Bruin archives.

Dhir said he thinks Murthy is passionate and dedicated and he looks forward to working with her during her transition.
