Alumnus B. John Garrick gifts $9 million for engineering institute

UCLA recently received a $9 million gift from an alumnus to create a risk management institute within the Henry Samueli School of Engineering and Applied Science, according to a university press release.
The new institute, the B. John Garrick Institute for the Risk Sciences, will focus on assessing and managing the risks posed by natural disasters and accidents at industrial plants. Researchers plan to analyze these topics by publishing a journal on risk management research and offering new courses to students in engineering graduate programs, among other initiatives.
The institute will have an advisory board chaired by Garrick, a former UCLA engineering student, along with a director appointed by Vijay K. Dhir, dean of UCLA Engineering. It will be located in the Engineering VI building, which is currently under construction, but will open in stages beginning in early 2015.
