For much of the 1970s, students at the University of California paid about $600 a year. Tuition has increased significantly over past few decades, leading to numerous protests, especially after an almost 18 percent tuition increase in the 2011-2012 academic year.

Tuition has stayed the same since 2011-2012, but the UC has said state funding remains at a historically low level.
