
On Sept. 8, 2013, at San Clemente High School’s football field, friends and family held a candlelight vigil to honor UCLA football wide receiver Nick Pasquale, who died after being struck by a car earlier that morning. One attendee showed his support by embracing Pasquale’s father, Mel Pasquale, who wore a shirt with his son’s jersey number to commemorate him.

University of California President Janet Napolitano walks by student protesters on her way to Bruin Plate for lunch with student leaders. Napolitano visited the UCLA campus on Oct. 11 last year, about two months after she was appointed the first female UC president.

Members of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees Local 3299 union went on strike outside the UCLA Ronald Reagan Medical Center on Nov. 20 last year to protest what they called unfair labor practices. Because of the strike, UCLA community members and students experienced limited or canceled discussion sections, medical care and dining services.

Brett Hundley, then a redshirt sophomore quarterback, dodges a Trojan defender. Hundley led the Bruins in rushing with 13 carries for 80 yards and two touchdowns on Nov. 30 of last year, giving UCLA its second straight football win over USC.

When Typhoon Haiyan devastated the Philippines in early November of last year, Paolo Montenegro was the first nurse sent by UCLA to aid with relief efforts. Along with the National Nurses United organization, Montenegro volunteered in Estancia, a small community that was still attempting to repair damage from an oil spill caused by the storm.

Michael Reyes, a fourth-year English student, was one of many people who spoke about the issue of divestment at an unusually long Undergraduate Students Association Council meeting Feb. 25-26. Reyes expressed his support for a resolution proposing divestment from companies that profit from the Israeli occupation of Gaza and the West Bank. Hundreds of students spent hours advocating for and against the resolution.

In March, the UCLA Luskin Lecture for Thought Leadership featured former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, who spent the majority of her lecture discussing issues that millennials face, such as unemployment and the challenges of unpaid internships. She also spoke on the conflict in Ukraine. Hundreds of students and community members attended the lecture.

Men’s basketball coach Steve Alford cuts down the net in celebration of the team’s Pac-12 championship game victory over the Arizona Wildcats in Las Vegas on March 15. The win was the Bruins’ first title since 2008, when perennial NBA All-Stars Kevin Love and Russell Westbrook played for UCLA.

Jason Ball, a graduate student in political science, participates in an April 3 strike held by the UC Student-Workers Union UAW Local 2865. More than a hundred unionized UCLA teaching assistants and supporters went on strike to protest alleged unfair labor practices.

Performers at Dance Marathon work to boost morale as they dance on stage and interact with the other dancers. Dance Marathon is a 26-hour event in which students fundraise to show their support for pediatric AIDS research.

Camp Kindle HIV ambassadors Cori and Gloria Gallarco traveled from Glendale, Ariz., to support Team Gold at UCLA’s Dance Marathon 2014 in April. This year, nearly 900 dancers raised about $445,000 in support of pediatric AIDS research.

Savannah Badalich, the undergraduate student government's Student Wellness commissioner, has been instrumental in bringing nationwide attention to the issue of sexual assault on college campuses in the past year. She began the nationally recognized 7000 in Solidarity campaign, which works to educate students on gender culture and the issues surrounding sexual assault, including those of consent and the underreporting of cases. Last month, the campaign won the University of California President's Award for Outstanding Student Leadership, an annual award given to students and UC student organizations.

Mitchell Harring, a third-year economics student, and Ilona Tarnavsky, a second-year biophysics student, exchange a kiss during Holi on April 12 at the Sunset Canyon Recreation Center. Holi is a South Asian tradition that celebrates the start of spring.

On May 9, LET’S ACT! campaign manager Tyler Cherry celebrated with Undergraduate Students Association Council President Devin Murphy after a close student government election race. Next year, Murphy will sit on the council with six Bruins United councilmembers.

Company ties together elements of dance and theater to create short comedic breaks between the acts of Spring Sing 2014 on May 16. Every year, the Student Alumni Association selects humorous students to be a part of Company.

Coldplay’s Chris Martin compounded lead vocals with performances on the guitar and piano during his performance at UCLA. Coldplay set upon Royce Hall on May 19 to celebrate the international release of its sixth studio album, “Ghost Stories.” The performance was the band’s only West Coast appearance on its mini world tour.

On May 25, UCLA’s JazzReggae Festival brought big-name performer Snoop Dogg to the Intramural Field. Hundreds of students and local concert enthusiasts spent hours lounging on the grass listening to the musicians.

On May 26, UC Santa Barbara alumni gathered with UCLA students in front of Royce Hall for a candlelight vigil to honor the victims of the recent Isla Vista shooting. UCLA students supported the UCSB community by standing in solidarity with those affected by the tragedy.
