University police plan to deploy an increased number of police officers at this quarter’s Undie Run because they anticipate increased attendance at the event.
The Undie Run, an unofficial university tradition usually held on the Wednesday of final exams week, typically has a larger police presence in spring because more individuals participate in the event during that quarter, UCPD spokeswoman Nancy Greenstein said in an email statement.
Officials decided to increase the number of police at the event because more people attended this year’s winter Undie Run than in years past, Greenstein added.
University police have already met with the Los Angeles Police Department in preparation for the evening, and the agencies will work together during the Undie Run, Greenstein said in the email.
UCPD has not yet decided how many officers will be on campus and in Westwood for the Undie Run, she added.
After the winter quarter Undie Run, about 20 to 30 officers patrolled Westwood, using protective gear such as shields and helmets. A crowd of about 400 people formed in the North Village, and officers aimed pepper balls at balconies and the ground after several people threw bricks, rocks and bottles at officers.
Students and police both told The Bruin that a large number of attendees were not affiliated with UCLA and did not come to the winter quarter event to participate in the run.
“The number of non-affiliated participants is increasing. … Many are not coming to run, (but are) hoping to find parties and other late-night activities,” Greenstein said. “The additional numbers (of officers are) to help ensure that our community stays safe.”
