Power was restored to most of the North Village around 3 a.m. Friday after a power outage hit thousands of area residents Thursday night, officials said.

About 4,500 Los Angeles Department of Water and Power customers in Westwood and surrounding areas were affected at the peak of the outage, said Kim Hughes, a department spokeswoman.

The number dropped to about 1,100 customers later in the night, Hughes said. She added that a small number of customers were also affected by a small transformer problem early Friday morning at about 5 a.m.

The power outage was caused by problems at a nearby distribution station.

Hughes said the department apologizes to all of the affected customers.
