UCPD reports attempted robbery in North Village

A man tried to steal a UCLA student’s purse in the North Village early Friday morning, university police said.

The female student was walking southbound on the east sidewalk of Levering Avenue near the intersection with Le Conte Avenue at 12:05 a.m. Friday, according to a UCPD report.

A man she did not know approached her from behind and tried to take the purse from her shoulder, officials said. After she screamed, the man let go and fled southbound on Gayley Avenue in a Ford Explorer SUV, according to the report.

The man was described as black with light skin and 6 feet tall with a skinny build. He was wearing a dark blue baseball hat, a light blue short-sleeved shirt and khaki cargo shorts.

No injuries were reported. The case is still under investigation.

UCPD recommends that individuals walk in groups at night and avoid walking with a cell phone in their hand. Additionally, police said students should tell robbers they intend to obey and observe what the robber looks like and is wearing.

Anyone with additional information regarding this incident or similar incidents can call UCPD at (310) 825-1491.
