Suspect in UCLA nurse stabbing appears in court, pleads not guilty

A man arrested for allegedly stabbing an on-duty nurse at a UCLA hospital in April pleaded not guilty to multiple felony charges Tuesday morning, officials said.

Ramiro Carnalla, 26, was charged with one felony count each of attempted murder and resisting an executive officer, and two misdemeanor counts of assault and battery.

Carnalla allegedly called 911 from outside the Olive View-UCLA Medical Center, about 20 miles north of UCLA, claiming to have a weapon. Officials said he then entered the hospital, bypassed the weapons screening area, fled from security and police officers and allegedly stabbed a nurse several times.

At his arraignment Tuesday morning, Carnalla’s bail was set to remain at $1,060,000, said Ricardo Santiago, a spokesman for the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s office. He is currently being held in the Men’s Central Jail downtown.

He will next appear in court for a preliminary hearing on June 23 in Dept. S of the San Fernando Courthouse.
