Thomas Robert Fredette, 38, was in the Harbor-UCLA Medical Center in Torrance on April 20 when he wandered into a room where a test was being administered, according to a press release from the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s office. He allegedly grabbed several pencils from a desk and stabbed one woman in the ear while she was taking the test.

A medical center employee heard the woman’s screams and held Fredette down until he was arrested, according to the press release. The nurse suffered non-life-threatening injuries and received medical treatment.

Fredette is currently being held at the Twin Towers Correctional Facility downtown on $60,000 bail. If convicted, he could face a maximum sentence of seven years in state prison.

Fredette will appear in court May 9 at 8:30 a.m. for a preliminary hearing at the Compton Courthouse.
