The U.S. Congress recently allocated $130 million to finance the extension of the Los Angeles Metro line, according to a Metro statement released Jan. 14.

The funding will be split in half to cover costs for both the Purple Line Extension project, which will go into Westwood Village, and the Regional Connector project – a Metro line extension across Los Angeles county.

The money comes from New Starts, a funding platform for Congress to support local transit companies with large projects.

Both projects will also receive funding from Measure R, a half-cent sales tax bump passed in Los Angeles in 2008, according to the statement.

The Purple Line’s budget for its first phase of construction and planning is currently set at $2.86 billion, and the Regional Connector’s budget is set at $1.42 billion.
