The University of California has received about $30 million from state lottery funds, according to a statement released Tuesday by the California State Controller’s office.

UC officials are only allowed to use these funds for instructional purposes. The lottery funds cannot be used to acquire new property, build new facilities or fund research, according to the Lottery Act.

Since its establishment in 1985, the state lottery has contributed more than $25 billion to public schools in California. The University of California receives 2.7 percent of overall lottery funds.

State K-12 schools received more than $1 billion from lottery funds for the 2012-13 year, while the California State University received more than $46 million and community colleges received more than $168 million.
