Video: UCLA Professor Michael Chwe turns stones into lithophones

By Patricia Ferido

Sept. 26, 2013 1:11 p.m.

In the classroom, UCLA Professor Michael Chwe lectures about political science and game theory but outside of the classroom, Professor Chwe enjoys making instruments from store-bought materials. Professor Chwe invites us into his home where he demonstrates how to turn granite tiles into a lithophone.

“You might pick up a stone and you hit it and it has a nice tone, but you wouldn’t think of it as an instrument,” he said. “But once you have like forty of them which is an instrument, then you realize this actually is something… The whole is much bigger than some of the parts.”
