Businessman makes largest donation from Asia to UCLA engineering school

The UCLA Henry Samueli School of Engineering and Applied Science recently received a $5 million donation to support the construction of the Engineering VI building – the largest donation from Asia in the university’s history, according to a UCLA statement released today.
The donation by David Mong, UCLA alumnus and Hong Kong-based businessman, is also the largest donation UCLA has received from an alumnus outside the United States, according to the statement.
The money will be used to construct a 250-seat facility in the Engineering VI building that will be named the Dr. William M. W. Mong Memorial Learning Center, after David Mong’s father.
Mong’s donation will play an important role in helping UCLA engineering to upgrade its educational and research facilities, said Vijay K. Dhir, dean of UCLA Engineering in the statement.
Construction on the building began in 2012. Engineering VI will replace Engineering 1A, according to Daily Bruin archives. The first phase of construction is scheduled to be completed by 2015 and the second phase is in the planning stages, according to the statement.
