Wayne Smutz, executive director of Penn State University’s World Campus and associate vice president for academic outreach, was named as the new dean of continuing education and UCLA Extension.

Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost Scott Waugh announced the appointment today in a letter to the campus.

In his current position, Smutz has worked with program development, marketing, strategic development and online learning with the goal to give students better access to quality education.

At UCLA, Smutz said he plans to work with faculty and and administrators to expand the university’s reputation as one of the top public universities in the world.

“We’re in a very dynamic period of change in higher education,” Smutz said in a university statement released Friday. “Continuing education and UCLA Extension have an important role to play in UCLA’s future.”

Smutz’s appointment must be approved by the UC Board of Regents. He is expected to officially take over the position on Oct. 15.
