Starting with the spring 2013 season, UCLA will add a new intercollegiate sport: women’s sand volleyball.

The sport was approved by the NCAA for intercollegiate play in 2009.

Former UCLA standout Stein Metzger will coach the team, and according to UCLA Athletics, he will work closely with women’s volleyball coach Michael Sealy. Metzger was a volunteer assistant coach under Sealy for the 2012 season, and has played beach volleyball at the Olympic level and on the Association of Volleyball Professionals Tour.

The team will compete in Santa Monica at the Annenberg Community Beach facility.

Sand volleyball is UCLA’s 25th intercollegiate sport.
