UCLA professor to be honored for receiving Alan Turing Award in computer science

The UCLA Computer Science Department will hold a public event on Oct. 22 to celebrate a UCLA professor who recently received the 2011 Alan Turing Award, considered the highest honor in the field of computer science.
Professor of computer science Judea Pearl formally received the award in June for his contributions to the field of artificial intelligence, which involves the partnership between humans and machines.
“In computer science, we don’t have a Nobel Prize, but we have something similar,” said Jens Palsberg, a professor and chair of the computer science department. “It’s the Turing Award.”
The event will include speeches by Pearl and three former Turing Award winners in the California NanoSystems Institute Auditorium from 10:15 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
