USAC Endorsement: Stephen Kraman for Facilities Commissioner

Endorsed
Stephen Kraman
Facilities Commissioner Candidate
Bruins United

Between two and four board members met with each candidate to discuss his or her platform, goals and evaluation of the current council and knowledge of USAC.

We also considered how the candidates would interact with the rest of the council and represent a diversity of student needs.
The board then selected endorsements for each office by a majority vote.
We reserved the right to not endorse a candidate for certain uncontested positions.
Voting begins today on MyUCLA at 10 a.m. and runs through Thursday at 6 p.m.

We endorse Stephen Kraman for his clear and focused platforms that center on student safety both on campus and on the Hill. Several advisements should be made, however, regarding the reach of his platforms and the steps needed to implement them.

Kraman’s strong background with the Office of Residential Life provides him with a developed understanding of the Hill and its administrative bodies. Several of Kraman’s platforms center on residential life, including improving the student room assignment survey process and streamlining the room swapping process.

Kraman’s plans, though, could benefit from more specificity. For example, his perimeter lighting platform is reminiscent of last year’s Facilities Commissioner Michael Starr’s “Light Up UCLA” platform, which was ultimately unsuccessful.

Similarly, we wonder if Kraman’s “Sustainability Task Force” might be too broad in scope for USAC’s purposes and whether its objectives will have a significant impact. Instead of leading small projects on recycling and composting, which will have minimal impact, Kraman’s office would be better suited for sustainable energy advocacy on campus.
