Tyler Honeycutt may already have two feet out the door, but Larry Drew II has one foot in.
Drew, a 6-foot-2-inch point guard, has enrolled in classes at UCLA for spring quarter. The athletic department announced the arrival of Drew on Monday hours after Honeycutt said he was leaving for the NBA.
Drew, who averaged 4.4 points and 3.9 assists per game this year, will have to sit sit out next season per NCAA rules but will be able to play the following season as a redshirt senior. UCLA did not previously have a point guard on the roster for the 2012-13 season.
Drew starred at Taft High in nearby Woodland Hills before attending North Carolina for three years, but suddenly left the school in February after being benched by Tar Heel coach Roy Williams in favor of freshman Kendall Marshall. The Tar Heels went on to win the ACC Tournament and advanced to the Elite Eight without Drew.
He becomes the third player on UCLA’s roster to trade Carolina blue for Bruin blue. Twins David and Travis Wear, both 6-foot-10-inch forwards, transferred to UCLA after playing their freshman seasons for Williams in Chapel Hill, N.C. The Wears sat out this season and will be eligible to play as redshirt sophomores in 2011-12.
