Good luck finding a distinctive soundtrack for flashback films of the 2000s

Topher Grace’s latest movie, the ’80s flashback “Take Me Home Tonight,” opened in theaters on Friday ““ it got me thinking, in my column this week, about what our ’00s flashback movies will be like. One of the main things I’m worried about is the music. The title of Grace’s movie, for instance, comes from an Eddie Money classic.
It’s virtually impossible to make an ’80s movie with a bad soundtrack. One of my recent favorites is “Adventureland,” starring Jesse Eisenberg as a recent college graduate who spends the summer working at the saddest little carnival you’ve ever seen. Falco’s fantastically corny “Rock Me Amadeus” makes a few appearances, and INXS’s “Don’t Change” plays over the credits.
I can’t help thinking the ’00s didn’t have such a distinctive, recognizable musical style, but maybe that isn’t bad thing. We can pull from Destiny’s Child, Nickelback, Eminem and OneRepublic, and get four very different moods. I’m not sure what that movie would be about, but it would elicit a whole lot of nostalgia.
