The Good pick: Special effects of "Tron: Legacy" not as innovative as original film

I didn’t see “Tron: Legacy,” though from what I hear it sounds like it doesn’t carry on the legacy too well. Not that the original “Tron” is a masterpiece ““ it’s actually a fairly silly movie, with a rather uninspired narrative arc and serviceable acting from Jeff Bridges. But when “Tron” came out in 1982, those special effects were truly groundbreaking. More importantly, the film visualized a world that was just beginning to occupy the imaginations of young people. The sequel was never going to repeat that accomplishment, given the dramatic strides that have been made in video game technology since the early ’80s. To tread new ground in the special effects department, “Tron: Legacy” probably would have had to reinvent 3-D the way “Avatar” did and get to it before James Cameron did. You can see the original “Tron,” and try to imagine being impressed by its visuals, on Saturday at the Aero Theatre at 7:30 p.m.
