Move over, Venti, the Trenta is in town

It’s here. The proverbial two notes from the soundtrack of “Jaws” could almost be heard in the distant background. I walked up to the counter, the room fell silent, and the seemingly pleasant girl in the green cap smiled and said, “Hi, would you like to make your order a Trenta today?”

On the first day the Trenta came out, I went to the Starbucks on Broxton and Weyburn to get my normal order of a hot Americano, only to be informed that the Trenta is only for iced coffee and iced teas. Shrugging it off, I ordered the iced coffee and waited for my drink. When I received the coffee, I almost laughed “”mdash; this drink didn’t look half bad. It didn’t seem as if it were any bigger than the Venti, which, up until Tuesday, was the largest size available. I was assured that this was the Trenta, however, so I took my drink and left. Only to get into my friend’s car, where she proceeded to laugh at me and said, “Dude. This is a Venti. I know my Starbucks.”

After a few phone calls, my previous skepticism was confirmed “”mdash; I had indeed received a Venti.

So the next day, I went to Starbucks again and received my free, complimentary Trenta. With the relief that I felt yesterday when I believed that I had received the Trenta and found it to be a decently sized drink, I walked in, confident that I could take this drink down.

But I was right to be afraid.

The Trenta is the Big Gulp of 7-Eleven; I could barely hold the drink in one hand. It felt so gluttonous to order that much coffee for one person that I couldn’t even bring myself to order a pastry.

But other than the massive size, nothing about the actual drink itself has changed. It is the same iced coffee that could come in any size. The only downside is that customers will not be able to get some of their normal orders.

While I doubt I will be ordering the Trenta again any time soon, it is a little nice having about a Grande left over in my refrigerator, right next to my other leftover takeouts. And, it saved me from making another trip for the second cup of coffee for the day.

Move over, Venti, the new heavyweight champion has come to town.

The new Starbuck’s size, the trenta, compared to the grande. Starbucks drinks now come in four sizes.
