Two North Village apartment complexes that were built more than 40 years ago will be demolished and replaced by newer facilities ““ the latest move in UCLA’s ongoing effort to meet off-campus housing demands.
The $57 million project, was approved Tuesday by the UC Board of Regents.
Students living at 625 and 641 Landfair Ave. and at 558 and 564 Glenrock Ave. will need to vacate the premises at the end of the school year.
Both complexes are deemed “well beyond their useful life,” according to the report submitted to the regents.
Neither meets current building codes.
Second-year linguistics student Naveed Heravi, who lived in the Landfair complex last year, said the building was old and the bathroom door was narrower than it should have been.
On the whole, UCLA has been falling short of its master plan to house students either on campus or within a mile of campus, said Steve Olsen, vice chancellor for finance, budget and capital programs.
Replacing the buildings will allow space for an additional 126 beds.
UCLA currently houses about 1,000 students in off-campus facilities.
The project is expected to take about two years to complete, Olsen said.
In the meantime, spots on the Hill will open up to accommodate students who would otherwise be in off-campus housing.
Similar construction projects are currently underway on Gayley and Weyburn avenues.
