Food Truck Junkie: Fear not, Fishlips Sushi offers fresh fish

While I have very few complaints about the alternative kitchens of food trucks, the mobility and size of food trucks inevitably decrease the reliability and amount of equipment each one has. These restrictions don’t do much to hinder the quality of the food a truck serves, but it does tend to prevent them from attempting more daring and innovative dishes. However, some trucks, like Fishlips Sushi, which is scheduled to serve the Court of Sciences on Friday, Nov. 19, serve specialized dishes by utilizing their limited space for a single kind of dish.

As the name suggests, Fishlips Sushi serves almost exclusively sushi, with the exception of their edamame side dish. Like most people I’ve talked to, I was extremely hesitant to purchase raw fish from a mobile kitchen. I had major concerns about the reliability of Fishlips’ coolers. However, once I tried the sushi, I was pleasantly surprised. The fish that they use is definitely fresh, and their rolls are among the more enjoyable sushi rolls that I’ve had.

While most restaurants restrict their customer’s choices by only allowing them to order a whole roll, Fishlips understands the need for variety. They offer a Roll Combination for $5.95 that comes with 2 pieces of their three main rolls: California Roll, Spicy Tuna Roll and Crunchy Roll. They also have a selection of Temari sushi. Temari sushi is similar to the classic nigiri sushi, but is shaped in the form of a ball instead. While the Roll Combination may seem small, it is actually quite filling. If you’re convinced that you’ll still be hungry, Fishlips has many other exciting rolls to try.

Unlike other trucks that have somewhat higher prices than their stationary restaurant competition, Fishlips actually provides their sushi at competitively low prices. One option that I haven’t been able to try, but that I am intrigued by, is their Vegetable Fish Lips Roll which uses no rice. If your only hesitation comes from being nervous about the quality of the fish being served, please do not let that stop you from trying this deliciously daring food truck.

Until we eat again,

The Food Truck Junkie
