UPDATED: Incoming freshman football players arrested on suspicion of felony theft

Three incoming UCLA freshman football players were arrested for suspected felony theft earlier this week, according to university police.

Josh Shirley, Paul Richardson and Shaquille Richardson were stopped outside of Hedrick Hall at 11:49 a.m. Wednesday and arrested by UCPD. All three student-athletes had enrolled in summer session classes, which started last week.

The three players were released from custody on Thursday after being held over night. The two Richardsons were released on $20,000 bail, while Shirley was released without bail.

The school’s athletic department has yet to release any statements on the subject.

“We are aware of the situation and we are looking into it,” UCLA Athletics spokesman Marc Dellins said. “We will have a comment at the appropriate time.”

The three players were part of coach Rick Neuheisel’s much-heralded 2010 recruiting class, ranked Top-10 in the country by many recruiting sources, including ESPN and Rivals.com.

Shirley, an athletic defensive end out of Kaiser High in Fontana, was a four-star recruit who shocked some experts in February by choosing to attend UCLA over cross-town rival USC.

Paul Richardson is a wide receiver from Gardena whose father played the same position for the Bruins in the late 1980s with Neuheisel as his receivers coach.

Shaquille Richardson, Paul’s cousin, is a defensive back from Los Alamitos.

The details and nature of the alleged crime have not been announced.
