Actions of radicals shouldn’t define Islam

CORRECTION: Rizwan Jattala is a student of Pakistani descent, not a Pakistani student.

SUBMITTED BY: Rizwan Jattala

As a student of Pakistani descent, I am particularly disturbed by and want to condemn the recent foiled Times Square bomb plot. Terror and Islam is like oil and water; they don’t mix at all. The problem is that those who have gone so far away from Islamic teachings shape the public image of Islam.

Prophet Muhammad said, “To love one’s country is a part of their faith.”

As a Muslim in the U.S., I am blessed with freedoms many people around the world do not have. I truly feel embarrassed when I see these so-called Muslims profess these radical agendas.

The actions of terrorists are the antithesis to what Islam professes and teaches and what the majority of Muslims believe. I ask everyone to learn more about Islam and to realize that the actions of a few radicals are as far as you can get from this beautiful religion.

Jattala is a second-year molecular, cell and developmental biology student.
