MEChA of UCLA barred from campaigning after accusing USAC candidate of racism

MEChA of UCLA was barred from campaigning today following the organization’s distribution of a letter aimed at Undergraduate Students Association Council Academic Affairs commission candidate Jason Youdeem.

MEChA accused Youdeem, a Bruins United candidate, of referring to MEChA as a racist organization while working as an Ask Peer Counselor.

The letter, considered campaign material, did not have a campaign stamp or logo and the materials were distributed within the structural confines of a building, which constituted two violations of the elections code, said Hector Lucero, Election Board chair.

Its content was not cause for sanction.

Youdeem denied all allegations against him, saying he does not comment on student groups.

MEChA chair Maritza Santillan said the letter was not the result of slate politics and was issued to bring awareness to the current campus climate on racism.

Compiled by Alex Chen, Sean Greene and Andra Lim, Bruin reporters.
