Coach Andy Banachowski retires after 43 years

Andy Banachowski has retired from the UCLA women’s volleyball team. The
43-year head of the Bruins announced his departure from the team
earlier today at a team meeting after their morning workout today.

“It’s
just time,” Banachowski said. “It just felt like it was a good time to
start anew. I told the team we’re starting a new decade and they’re
going to have the first step in a new era.”

The athletic department has not yet begun their search for a
replacement, but Banachowski said assistant head coach Kim Jagd is not
a likely candidate.

“I think that they will hire from outside,” he said. Banachowski,
the winningest coach in Division I women’s volleyball history, said he made his decision this
weekend after the team performed their annual evaluation of their past
season.
