Athletes to join Hall of Fame

By Daily Bruin Staff

Oct. 7, 2009 9:11 p.m.

UCLA Athletics is inducting eight new members into its Hall of Fame, announced Marc Dellins, associate athletic director and sports information director.

The ceremonies are on Friday night in J.D. Morgan Center and Covel Commons and is by invite only. Fans, however, will have a chance to recognize the athletic icons at halftime of Saturday’s football game against Oregon at the Rose Bowl.

The university welcomes Tyus Edney, James “Cap” Haralson, Cade McNown, Stein Metzger, Nicolle Payne, J.J. Stokes, Daiva Tomkus and Walt Torrence as the 2009 inductees to the Hall of Fame.

Most notable among the 2009 class is McNown, the only UCLA quarterback to be 4-0 against USC. McNown also led the Bruins on a 20-game winning streak that was eventually broken by Miami (FL) in their regular season finale. McNown was drafted twelfth overall in the 1999 NFL draft and enjoyed a four-year career in the NFL.

The eldest member of the class, Haralson, passed away in 1967. During his time at UCLA, Haralson became the first Bruin to earn a varsity letter in four events: track and field, football, basketball and baseball.

According to an Athletics Department press release, Edney, McNown, Metzger, Payne, Stokes and Tomkus will be in attendance at Saturday’s football game. Haralson will be represented by his two daughters, Mary Sowers and Anita Gifford, while Torrence, who played for legendary men’s basketball coach John Wooden, will be represented by his widow, Ada, and his son, Gregory.
