The UCLA football team’s season opener will be played on Saturday at the Rose Bowl as scheduled, UCLA officials announced today.

“Based on the current and projected information regarding conditions at the Rose Bowl provided to us by the (Air Quality Management District) and Pasadena city officials, including fire and health personnel, and after consultation with our medical staff, we are confirming that the game will be played as scheduled,” UCLA Athletic Director Dan Guerrero said in a statement. “We will continue to monitor the situation in conjunction with city officials in Pasadena and the AQMD.”

The announcement came after days of speculation on the impact the Station fire would have on the air quality and other climatic conditions at the Rose Bowl.

AQMD Executive Officer Barry Wallerstein said in a statement, “Based on recent air quality measurements from a monitor stationed at the Rose Bowl this week and expected weather conditions Saturday, it should be game on for UCLA.”

UCLA will debut the 2009 season against San Diego State. Kickoff is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. on Saturday.
