Our annual Blue and Gold Week, the legendary time of Bruin spirit and pride, is upon us. Without fail these next few days will allow all UCLA students and affiliates to demonstrate our superiority over our Los Angeles neighbor, but we should tread with civility.

We should not, and will not, stoop to the below-the-belt hits in the form of unneeded verbal abuse and we will not hang effigies of our rival’s mascot, as they have done to our Bruin bear in previous years.

And even though USC has allowed an absurdly miniscule number of Bruin seats in the Coliseum this year, the UCLA spirit and pride will emanate through the stadium.

Bruins, we urge you to demonstrate our superiority in other more productive ways. Go to the “Get the Red Out” blood drive and participate in Friday’s World Aids Day campaign.

We need every man, woman and child to spread Bruin pride and goodwill throughout Los Angeles this week instead of wasting all our time in drunken, unproductive rages, although a tiny break from philanthropy may be deserved at some point.
