United Auto Workers Local 2865, the union representing UC teaching assistants, tutors and readers, has announced on its Web site that it has ended contract negotiations and has reached a tentative agreement with the University of California.

Union members were threatening to strike if a compromise was not reached. In light of their agreement, however, all classes are continuing as usual.

According to a statement from the UC, negotiations ended early this morning with hour-by-hour time extensions.

Highlights of the new contract include improvements in wages, child care, parental leave, health care and protection from excessive workload, the statement said.

The union will be voting on the contract in the coming days, at which time further details about the terms will be released.
