Gene Block

The university’s 10th chancellor, Block took over on Aug. 1. He was formerly provost at the University of Virginia. He oversees the entire university, from the undergraduate, graduate and professional schools to the UCLA Medical Center. See our coverage of him on pages 20-21 for more information.

Janina Montero

Vice chancellor of Student Affairs, Montero has been with UCLA since July 2003. Montero was previously vice president for campus life and student services at Brown University. In addition to overseeing Student Academic Services, such as financial aid, registrars and undergraduate admissions and relations with other schools, her duties also include oversight on student development and health as well as student and campus life, which includes the Office of Residential Life and the Office of the Dean of Students.

Bob Williams

Executive director of Associated Students UCLA, Williams oversees a $75 million operation, which is made up of the UCLA Store, campus restaurants, student government and student media. ASUCLA is responsible for the trademark and licensing of the UCLA name and logo, as well as some funding for student groups.

Scott Waugh

Acting executive vice chancellor and provost, Waugh spent 14 years as dean of the division of social sciences. He chairs influential committees such as the Campus Space Committee and the Chancellor’s Enrollment Advisory Committee. Vice chancellors, associate vice chancellors, deans, vice provosts and assistant provosts, and the university librarian jointly report to him and either the chancellor or the executive dean.

Richard Blum

Chairman of the UC Board of Regents, Blum wrote a letter to his fellow regents, titled “We Need to be Strategically Dynamic” in August that called for reforms within the UC administrative system. In the letter, he proposed changes such as eliminating unnecessary administrative positions and creating a scholarship fund.

Wyatt Rory Hume

UC provost and chief operating officer, Hume oversees the daily operations of the university after the announcement in June from UC President Robert Dynes that he will retire in 2008. The Los Angeles Times called him a “leading candidate” to take over for Dynes following his retirement.
