Over 30 people were killed at Virginia Tech University Monday morning after a gunman opened fire in two buildings on campus, marking the deadliest incident ever on a U.S. university campus.

The man fired shots in a dorm and a classroom, leaving at least 30 people dead before being killed himself.

It was not clear whether the gunman had killed himself or whether police had shot him.

The shooter has yet to be identified, and it was unclear whether he was a student.

Witnesses said the gunman first entered West Ambler Johnston, a dorm that houses nearly 900 students, and killed at least one person.

About two hours later, he returned to campus and went into the Norris engineering building, where he shot many more people.

“Today the university was struck with a tragedy that we consider of monumental proportions,” said Virginia Tech president Charles Steger. “The university is shocked and indeed horrified.”

Authorities did not yet have a motive for the massacre, but were investigating all possibilities.
