Workshops to help Bruins avoid crime

In response to student reports of theft and other campus crimes, the Undergraduate Students Association Council is sponsoring a crime awareness week.
“We want to educate students about resources that are available to them on and off campus,” said Gregory Cendana, USAC internal vice president. “We also want to provide workshops to help students avoid situations where they could become victims.”
The week will have events sponsored by organizations including Lambda Legal and the American Civil Liberties Union.
Lambda Legal is scheduled to give a presentation Tuesday on hate crimes, said Carlos Saucedo, a USAC general representative.
The ACLU is scheduled to give a presentation Wednesday along with Student Legal Services about “knowing your rights,” Saucedo added.
On Thursday there will be a workshop on identity theft, which is especially relevant to the UCLA community after the recent data breach resulting in compromised Social Security numbers for thousands of people, Saucedo said.
“This is a step in giving students resources to prevent crime from happening,” Cendana said.
