THE”ˆGOOD: Sophomore quarterback Pat Cowan
played the best game of his young career, going 22-of-40 for 329
yards and scoring a touchdown on the ground. He effectively
scrambled at times, rushing for first downs and throwing on the
run, where he seems most comfortable. He directed the Bruins
against a solid defense and threw with authority, spreading the
ball out to 10 different receivers. Cowan did not play like a
backup and showed major signs of improvement, hitting receivers for
15-yard or more gains nine times. He also threw a great fade to
closely covered wide receiver Marcus Everett on the play before the
first interception, but the ball bounced off Everett’s hands
in the corner of the end zone.
THE”ˆBAD: The only major errors on
Cowan’s part were the two interceptions he threw ““ one
to end a drive on Cal’s 25 at the end of the first half and
the other late in the third quarter on an athletic play by Cal
corner Daymeion Hughes. Though the game might have been much
different without these mistakes, Cowan attempted the deep ball
consistently
throughout the game, often hitting his targets.
THE”ˆVERDICT: Cowan played a great game,
and if he keeps improving, the Bruins stand a legitimate shot of
being very competitive in the rest of their games. He showed poise
and maturity in Berkeley and will need to keep it up, as the
Bruins’ schedule does not get any easier from here.
