Chancellor Albert Carnesale, who will be stepping down from his
post in June, has been announced as the keynote speaker for the
Hippocratic Oath ceremony for the UCLA David Geffen School of
Medicine. In an unusual twist, both speaker and students will be
saying farewell to their university with the graduation
ceremony.
Carnesale and L.A. Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, a UCLA alumnus,
will headline a list of keynote speakers that also includes a
judge, a doctor and a philanthropist.
UCLA plans to award about 11,000 degrees in graduation
ceremonies from May 12 to June 17, according to a press
release.
University officials expect about 8,500 students will walk in
the ceremonies, and about 90,000 guests will attend the events.
Villaraigosa will deliver the speech for the UCLA College to an
expected crowd of almost 15,000. It is tradition for a
distinguished UCLA alumnus to deliver the keynote address for the
College.
Yvonne Burke, who will be speaking at the UCLA School of Public
Affairs graduation, said she has previously given commencement
speeches at UCLA and other schools, but she is honored
nonetheless.
Addressing the School of the Arts and Architecture will be
philanthropist Eli Broad, who has funded numerous UCLA projects,
including $23.2 million for the construction of the Eli and Edythe
Broad Art Center, set to open later this year.
At the ceremony, Broad and his wife will be presented with the
UCLA medal, which is the university’s highest honor.
Also giving speeches at commencement ceremonies are Judge Janice
Rogers Brown (School of Law); Dr. David Johnsen (School of
Dentistry); Samuel Goldwyn Jr. (School of Theater, Film and
Television); John Bryson (Anderson School of Management); John
Garamendi (School of Public Health); Linda Burnes Bolton (School of
Nursing); and Marshall “Mark” Drummond (Graduate School
of Education and Information Studies). The Henry Samueli School of
Engineering and Applied Science has yet to announce their keynote
speaker.
