Though she’s running unopposed, Student First! in-house
candidate Marivell Caba’s specific, feasible plans for
fulfilling the responsibilities of Cultural Affairs commissioner
make her an appropriate choice for the position.
Additionally, her enthusiasm for the responsibilities that come
with the office will be an asset in getting things
accomplished.
Because she is focusing this enthusiasm into using the arts and
culture programs as opportunities to promote community and provide
diverse education shows that she is taking the right people – the
students – into consideration.
Her plan for the Happenings Web site is a good example. Making
the Web site into a comprehensive calendar where organizers can
advertise their programs more effectively and where students can be
informed of the diversity of programs they can attend may not be
ground-breaking in its creativity, but if successfully implemented
it could be an important service.
Also, her plans for a Cultural Day Showcase will be a good
addition to Welcome Week, giving students a chance to sample the
diverse choices of cultural programming that will happen on campus
throughout the year.
And while her idea for a quarterly art gallery series presenting
student work may interest a more specific audience from the UCLA
community, it is still a service that campus is lacking and from
which it would benefit.
