Editorial: Dorm life demands late-night eatery

The slogan says it all: Puzzles is “where it all comes
together.” But the eatery will be shutting its doors at the
end of this year as the late-night student meeting and eating place
on the Hill.
For almost all students who have ever lived in the dorms, the
mention of Puzzles brings back memories of ever-so-satisfying
greasy food, the consumption of which can only be justified by
either having to stay up late to study or various degrees of
intoxication.
The removal of the eatery creates the potential for bigger
problems than depriving future Bruins of the memories that it has
given all of us: Puzzles is currently the only place on the Hill
where residents can get food past midnight most days of the
week.
UCLA Dining Services is closing Puzzles as it reconsiders its
role on the Hill and as dining officials get ready to open a new
grab-and-go restaurant called Rendezvous in Rieber Terrace. The new
eatery is a response to students’ interest in having more
options of that nature available.
With the exception of Friday and Sunday nights, when Bruin Cafe
is open until 2 a.m., Puzzles is the only place on the Hill that
provides food between midnight and 2 a.m. the rest of the week.
Though the focus on expanding menus and food options on the Hill
is commendable, the availability of food in the early-morning hours
is an important service that should not be taken away from those
students with late-night habits.
