For peace, Hamas must stop rhetoric
Bruins for Israel endorses Josef Avesar’s efforts to
promote dialogue between Israelis and Palestinians (“Alum
proposes Israeli-Palestinian union,” Feb. 27). It is by
cooperating on issues that these two parties may come closer to
dealing with larger political questions such as border
locations.
Avesar’s efforts are a good step toward peace. Real and
lasting peace will only be achieved when Israelis and Palestinians
can sit together at the table and negotiate; unfortunately in
today’s situation, the Israelis do not have a partner for
peace. The terrorist group Hamas, which was recently elected to a
majority of Palestinian parliament seats, still calls for the
destruction of Israel. When Hamas stops terrorizing Israeli
civilians and ends its inciting rhetoric, proposals like
Avesar’s will be able to take hold and promote peace in the
Middle East. We hope that day will come soon.

UCI cartoon display careless
The decision by the College Republicans at UC Irvine to display
the cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad was irresponsible. Their event
was not only condemned by Muslims, but also by many others.
It is interesting that panelists accused all Muslims of being
fascists and called Islam an “evil religion.” This is
similar to the type of propaganda and hate speeches that were used
against Jews in Nazi Germany. I wonder if the College Republicans
at UCI would defend the Nazis under the banner of free speech.
All people of conscience should realize that this hateful
discourse is unacceptable and only furthers the gap between our
communities.
