Male, female RAs on each floor helpful

Two resident assistants on each floor is a good idea if
there’s one male and one female RA (“Too many roles,
too little time,” Jan. 31). I had a female RA in my first
year and I felt that she understood the anxieties I had as a
first-year girl in a new school. I didn’t hang out with her
as a friend, but it felt good knowing I could go to her. My second
year, I had a male RA and even though he was cool, I wasn’t
able to talk to him as I did with my previous RA.

In fact, instead of talking to me about problems, he reported me
to the resident director without consulting me.

It’s a good idea to have more personal time with
residents, especially if there is someone who can relate to each
student’s needs, like a female RA for female residents and a
male RA for male residents.
