The UCLA women’s golf team finished off a record-setting
tournament in style on Wednesday, coming home with a convincing
first-place title at the Las Vegas Founders Women’s
Collegiate Showdown held at the University of Nevada, Las
Vegas.

After playing a three-day tournament at Las Vegas’ Anthem
Golf Course, the second-ranked Bruin golf team managed to not only
win the entire tournament, but to break two school records in the
process.

The Bruins finished off the tournament on the third day with an
exceptional overall team score of 840 (-24), which set a new school
record and tournament record.

The score was 27 strokes higher than second-place Kent State,
which finished with a score of 867 (+3). Pepperdine, Arizona and
UNLV finished an overall third, fourth and fifth place,
respectively.

By shooting a 279 (-9) on Monday, the Bruins were able to break
the previous UCLA team record for a single round (to par) of 281
(-7).

The Bruins broke that new record during the third round on
Wednesday by shooting an astounding score of 276 (-12).

This type of play put the win directly into the hands of the
Bruins making all their tough practices between tournaments
seemingly worthwhile.

“I feel like we had a really good tournament and played
very well. It was great to see all our hard work pay off,”
said coach Carrie Forsyth on the team’s record-breaking
win.

Junior Hannah Jun played exceptionally well, taking the
individual first-place spot and finishing with a tournament score
of 206 (-10); the score broke the previous individual UCLA record
of 207 (-9), which was set by Charlotte Mayorkas last year.

Although this match was obviously a major team effort by the
five participating Bruins, the individual play from the team was
far from unnoticed.

UCLA not only managed to finish with all individuals well within
the top 20, but with Jun taking first place with 206 (-10),
freshman Jane Park taking second with 208 (-8), and freshman
Tiffany Joh tying for third with 206 (-6). The Bruins closed out
the top three individual rankings.

Sophomore Amie Cochran finished 11th with an even 216, while
senior Susie Mathews rounded up the Bruin squad tied at 16th with
217 (+1).

The Bruins have had a momentous winning streak underway as they
head into preparations for their next tournament on Nov. 11 at the
Collegiate Match Play Championship, in which the individuals will
go into a head-to-head-type competition.

Although the tournament will have a different format from their
past tournaments, coach Carrie Forsyth said she is confident that
the Bruins will be able to continue their momentum from the Las
Vegas tournament.
