The UCLA men’s golf team was cruising at The Prestige at
PGA West in Palm Springs before darkness hit and play was
suspended. When the team returned to the course on Tuesday, they
picked up right where they left off. UCLA won its second-straight
tournament title at The Prestige, capturing a 10-stroke victory
over BYU at the par-72, 7,156-yard Greg Norman Course. UCLA, which
led after each round, posted team scores of 280 (-8), 291 (+3) and
289 (+1) to finish at 860 (-4), followed by BYU at 870 (+6), UC
Irvine at 872 (+8) and Illinois at 875 (+11). Pepperdine and Notre
Dame tied for fifth at 880 (+16). Junior Chris Heintz and freshman
Erik Flores tied for third at 214 (-2). Flores fired a 70 (-2) and
Heintz posted a 71 (-1) in the final round. Sophomore Daniel Im
tied for sixth at 215 (-1) after posting a 71 in round three.
Freshman Lucas Lee tied for 11th at 217 (+1), and junior Joakim
Renstrom tied for 68th at 231 (+17). Tim Cha of UC Irvine and Danny
Zimmerman of Illinois tied for medalist honors at 3-under par 213.
UCLA’s 10-shot victory was the second largest in the
tournament’s six-year history, trailing only Texas
Christian’s 15-stroke victory in 2002. Additionally, it was
just one shot off the nine-shot win the Bruins recorded at last
year’s tournament, also played at the Greg Norman Course.

MEN’S TENNIS: Barring bad weather, the
Bruins will head toward the Malibu coast today to begin competition
in the ITA Regional Championships, hosted by Pepperdine. The
defending national champions will compete in the tournament until
Sunday if everything goes as planned. The Bruins were finally able
to practice for the tournament yesterday evening as the clouds
drifted away and the Los Angeles Tennis Center’s courts began
to dry. Bruin junior Benjamin Kohlloeffel captured the men’s
singles title over San Diego State’s Armando Carrascosa (6-1,
6-1) at last year’s tournament. Two graduated Bruins, Kris
Kwinta and Alberto Francis, who were members of last year’s
championship team, captured the doubles title at last
season’s ITA Regional Championships.

HAVNER ON A SHORT LIST: Senior middle
linebacker Spencer Havner has been named a semifinalist for the
36th Rotary Lombardi Award. The Lombardi Award is given to the
season’s top college linebacker or defensive lineman. Havner,
who opened the season on the watch list for several defensive
awards, is joined by 11 other players, including Virginia’s
D’Brickshaw Ferguson and Texas’ Rod Wright.

BASEBALL LOOKS FOR NEW MANAGERS: The UCLA
baseball program has two paid positions available for student
managers, who will assist with the day-to-day operation of the
team. Interested applicants should contact P.C. Shaw, director of
baseball operations.
