Money raised for landslide victims

LAGUNA BEACH “”mdash; Some $50,000 was raised during two weekend
fundraisers for victims of the Bluebird Canyon landslide, which
destroyed more than a dozen multimillion-dollar homes last
week.

City geologists said Southern California’s near-record
rainy season likely led to the June 1 slide that destroyed or
severely damaged 22 luxury homes.

“The state geologists don’t feel construction had
anything to do with the landslide,” Councilmember Cheryl
Kinsman said.

But a state geologist who toured the site said Sunday it was too
soon to blame wet weather.

California Geological Survey senior engineer and geologist
Pamela Irvine said more analysis was needed.

“It might have been part of an ancient landslide or it
might have been fresh bedrock that slipped,” she said.
