This year, students at UCLA have shown an unprecedented sense of
international consciousness and have rallied as a community behind
issues that affect populations far beyond Westwood.

In December, a broad coalition of campus groups held World AIDS
Day, building knowledge of the international crisis and offering
free rapid HIV testing to students.

Students returned to campus for winter quarter and initiated a
widespread campaign for tsunami relief. Student groups united as
the Tsunami Relief Coalition, raising aid through methods ranging
from taking donations on Bruin Walk and at Associated Students UCLA
cash registers to organizing a dodgeball tournament.

More recently, the Darfur Action Committee has held a variety of
programs to bring student attention to the genocide in Sudan and
are calling for University of California divestment from the
area.

This year the student community as a whole has shown concern for
issues beyond their grades and student fees ““ they have
formed coalitions to address serious concerns in the international
community including epidemics, natural disasters and genocide.

Students should be applauded for their efforts in seeking
positive international change, and future students must continue
these efforts for the betterment of this campus and the rest of the
world.
