Honesty bodes well for future of Bruins
I have been on staff at UCLA for nearly 22 years and attended
this magnificent university in the early 1960s. Moreover, one of my
daughters did her undergraduate and graduate coursework here.
Many highlights flood my mind as I think back on my time at
UCLA, but among the most uplifting is what happened early Wednesday
morning.
I was walking with a colleague to a breakfast meeting at a
Westwood Boulevard cafe. I had placed a wad of money and my
business card in my pocket to avoid carting along a purse.
When we reached our destination, I felt my pocket ““ I was
shocked to find it was empty!
Somewhere along the route, the contents had fallen out. We
retraced our steps without success.
I was in a snit until I came back to the office. My voice mail
contained a message from Erik, a UCLA student, who had discovered
my money and card on his way to class.
I returned his call, and we met at 1 p.m., when he handed me all
my money back.
I was sure to give him a small reward, but the real reward is
his honesty and integrity. If Erik represents UCLA and its promise,
then we have nothing to worry about, Bruins.
