For over a decade it has been a UCLA tradition that seniors
donate into a special fund and buy UCLA a class gift.
It is disappointing that tradition has been altered by the UCLA
Fund to instead divert the money to a general pool that supports no
predetermined gift.
In past years seniors have bought everything from ambulances to
computers in Ackerman Union to the Royce Hall fountain.
Now the money will go to a fund primarily used to support
scholarships and academic programs.
Administrators of the UCLA Fund said that in the past, tangible
promises sometimes did more harm than good because their final
costs were higher than the amount of money pledged.
But administrators should not ignore the benefits of having
seniors see tangible evidence of their gift giving.
Even with the new policy, seniors should still contribute to the
Fund. But UCLA should strongly consider bringing back the tradition
of donating for a specific cause.
