With its losing streak having extended to 13 games following the
Pac-10 series opener against Arizona, the UCLA baseball team will
look to snap that streak in a non-conference game today at No. 21
Long Beach State. The Dirtbags, meanwhile, have won their last four
games in a row and have not lost a series since the middle of
February. Three of those series wins came over teams ranked in the
top 15 in the country at the time, including top-ranked Cal State
Fullerton. UCLA holds a 35-24 edge in the last 20 years over the
Dirtbags, but has lost four of the last six contests. The teams
split their two-game series last year, with each team winning at
home. Today will be the only meeting between the schools this
year.
FOOTBALL: Kurt Altenberg, a wide receiver for the UCLA football
team in the 1960s, died Sunday afternoon after a battle with
cancer. Altenberg, 61, passed away at Torrance Memorial Hospital.
In the 1965 rivalry game, Altenberg caught the winning touchdown
pass in UCLA’s 20-16 win over USC, helping lead the Bruins to
the Rose Bowl that season. He currently ranks 16th all-time in
school history with 87 catches for 1,444 yards. Altenberg recently
worked as a receivers coach at his high school alma mater, Serra
High.
WOMEN’S HOOPS: Junior guard Nikki Blue was named to the
Kodak/WBCA Honorable Mention All-America Team for this past season
after averaging 17 points and six assists per game. Blue has also
received AP honorable mention All-American acclaim and Pac-10
All-Tournament team after a career-high 36 points in the Pac-10
Tournament quarterfinal game against Arizona State. Sophomore guard
Noelle Quinn earned honorable mention Pac-10 All-Academic acclaim,
earning over a 3.0 overall grade point average her sophomore
year.
ROWING: This past weekend, the No. 19 UCLA women’s rowing
team competed in the 32nd annual San Diego Crew Classic, finishing
fourth in the Jessop-Whittier Cup. After placing second in the
preliminary heat with a time of 6:54.42 on Saturday, the varsity
eight competed in the final and fell at the hands of Stanford after
defeating Tennessee, Texas and Purdue. The women’s junior
varsity team finished sixth and the women’s collegiate novice
squad placed second.
