CHICO “”mdash; Criminal charges will probably be filed in the
death of a 21-year-old California State University student who died
while undergoing hazing at a rogue fraternity, a police spokesman
said Thursday.

Matthew William Carrington of Pleasant Hill died early Wednesday
while drinking large amounts of water and doing exercises in the
basement of the Chi Tau house, about five blocks from the
university’s Chico campus, said Sgt. Dave Barrow.

Barrow said results were not available from an autopsy performed
Thursday.

He said Carrington and another Chi Tau pledge were
“˜”˜drinking large amounts of water out of a five-gallon
jug and intermittently doing exercises such as push-ups in this
dark, dank basement.”
